Road Safety Audit training and experience in the UK is generally specified either by DMRB GG 119 or by a local highway authority’s own requirements. DRMB GG 119 is mandatory for the strategic trunk road and motorway network, but is commonly referred to as “good practice” for local highway authorities who do not have their own Road Safety Audit procedures. Many local highway authorities work to the DMRB industry standard by default.
It is generally accepted that 10 days of formal collision investigation or road safety engineering training forms the core initial training for Road Safety Auditors.
Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the overseeing organisation to approve the training and experience required (including any requirements for experience of specific types of schemes), when they approve the CVs for the Road Safety Audit Team.
Following the UK Government’s response to the European Directive on Road Infrastructure Safety Management, road safety auditors working on the UK Strategic Road Network are required to have a formal Certificate of Competency in Road Safety Audit.
In order to become formally qualified (in line with National Highways) you will require the following:
DMRB GG 119 requires Road Safety Auditors to complete ten days formal Road Safety Engineering training. With TMS you can undertake this by attending the RoSPA Road Safety Engineering course.
If you have 1 year of collision data analysis or road safety engineering/road design experience, You will then be in a position to be able to undertake collision investigation and prevention work and also able to attend Road Safety Audits as a Team Observer.
While not a requirement of DMRB GG 119, TMS would strongly recommend that you attend our Introduction to Road Safety Audit course.
This is a three-day course designed to give a comprehensive introduction to road safety auditing, providing hands-on experience of carrying out road safety audits of a number of different scheme types.
Upon achieving Road Safety Audit Team Member status and an appropriate level of experience, you are then eligible to complete the Certificate of Competency course.
This course will provide you with two days CPD for the current year and the opportunity to undertake the National Highways approved certification process to achieve your Certificate of Competency in Road Safety Audit, in line with the advice in DMRB GG 119.
DMRB GG 119 requires Road Safety Auditors to maintain their road safety knowledge base by undertaking two day’s CPD each year.
TMS runs a number of training courses appropriate for CPD.
